Nice is a city and commune, and the prefecture of the department of Alpes-Maritimes, and the administrative region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France. It is located on the French Riviera, the country's southeastern coast on the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of the French Alps. It was the capital city of the historical County of Nice (French: Comté de Nice, Niçard: Countèa de Nissa). Nice is located approximately 13 kilometres (8 mi) west of the principality of Monaco and 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of the French–Italian border. It is the second most populated French city on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille.
